Here is one is supposedly "stole" from GSAguy (his words...lol). Later, "ToningintheBlood" (an expert in Morgans) told me it was a Redfield coin. I really know nothing about Morgan's so I don't really know. I'll assume Dale was correct...

PS: Mine has been graded and NOT in one of those holders.

Here is a nice 1896 Redfield Dollar.
  • A Morgan I need for my collection is being auctioned on ebay. The price is about 15% over greysheet. Do these command any type of premium? The coin I am looking at has been listed and gone out unbid at least once and is currently unbid.

    Any input?

forgot to mention it is a Redfield.

Ouch JOM!!!! You had to remind me of that one..............ruthless b*astard!image

P.S. For the record, I agree with TITB. It's got classic Redfield Holder toning.

  • Frank...is it in the original Redfield holder or a grading service holder ???

Ones in the original Paramount holder, based on what I've seen and paid in auctions, command a premium. PCGS/NGC...I don't know but I'd say probably not much. While I can't speak for the Redfield collector community, small as it probably is, I know I have and will pay a premium for an original holdered nice looking well toned Reddy...but don't get nearly excited about a "service slabbed" one.

The paramount holdered common date RF's do seem a tad high to me but thats what the market is doing with them right now i guess.

  • You have to be careful with Redfield pedigreed coins that are not in the Paramount Redfield holders. There are Redfield pedigreed dollars out there in PCGS and NGC slabs for dates and mints that were never in the Redfield hoard. The major services aren't tend to put anything in a Paramount holder in as a Redfield coin.

Your right. I only like the paramount Redfields.

I guess only "A-Mark," whoever they are now, would know specifically, since they won the rights to it, however, there are some estimates of the holdings in th VAM book. If that info is unavailable to you, I could post it; it is by no means "definitive" but I believe it is only lacking in the exact numbers of a particular date. In any event, I'll post and anyone who cares to can expound.

    Est quantities of bags

    1/4 bag - 1883-S, 1895-S
    1/2 bag - 1879-CC
    < 1 bag - 1896-S, 1898-S, 1899-S, 1903, 1921-S, 1924-S, 1935-S
    1 bag - 1885-CC
    1-2 bags - 1892
    1-3 bags - 1893
    2 bags - 1888-S
    2-4 bags - 1892-CC
    3 bags - 1879-S R78
    3-4 bags - 1925-S
    3-5 bags - 1889-S, 1891-CC, 1927-S
    few bags - 1893-CC, 1895, 1900-S, 1922-S, 1923-S
    several bags - 1886, 1928-S
    many - 1887-S, 1889, 1890, 1890-S, 1891-S
    dozens - 1878-S, 1879-S, 1880-S, 1881-S
    couple dozen - 1897, 1897-S, 1898

If this is accurate, at least you can see the dates included.

  • There isn't anything truly difinitive but one of the members of the local coin club collects the Redfields dollars and has been since they first came on the market. Most of the hoard was marketed by Paramount Stamp and Coin and he has all of their circulars, ads etc from back then with all of the Redfield sales and for all of the different conditions. There are dollars in PCGS slabs with Redfield "pedigrees" they were never included in any Paramount Redfield ad. And since by the time PCGS started up the only way you could really prove that a particular coin came form the Redfield hoard was if it was in a Paramount Redfield holder. Unfortunately since so many people sell Paramount holdered coins as Redfield pieces it is probable that some were also pedigreed as Redfield on the PCGS slabs.

Why did you dig up a 6 year old thread? The old links don't work, you just should have started a new one!!!
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

I was working for Coin World when Paramount started mass marketing the Redfield coins. We always referred to it as "The Redfield Hoard." They kept asking us, politely, to refer to it as "The Redfield Collection." We never did, even though they were one of our biggest advertisers at the time.

Maybe CU can establish an icon to go to the left of the thread title to indicate that this is an old thread dug up from the dusty vault. How about the sterotype "Father Time" old man with a sickle image that you usually see on Dec. 31st?
